Course Summary

This course provides a focused overview of the welded fabrication of nickel-containing stainless steels in corrosion-resistant service, exploring key welding preparation, joint design, process selection and fabrication practices to ensure long-term integrity and corrosion performance.

In industrial environments where corrosion-resistant service is required, the selection of materials and their fabrication method are critical. This course delves into the welded fabrication of nickel-containing and stainless steels, drawing on the Nickel Institute’s guidelines to present best-practice methods across three domains: welder preparation and shop practices; materials and metallurgical considerations; and design-engineer responsibilities. Participants will learn how factors such as embedded iron, surface oxides, joint design, filler metal selection, and process qualification influence weld integrity and corrosion performance. The course further covers specific welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, etc.), and how to avoid common defects, design crevices, and ensure proper purging and cleaning.

By the end of the programme, attendees will be equipped to apply fabrication practices that optimise corrosion-resistant stainless steel structures and equipment, reducing failure risk and improving longevity in service.
