Summary of the lecture
Simulation offers a practical way to connect steelmaking theory with the operational decisions that shape process performance. By experimenting with realistic scenarios in a digital environment, learners can explore how decisions in the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and Secondary Steelmaking (SS) stages influence production outcomes.
For both students and steel industry professionals, this type of hands-on learning helps strengthen metallurgical understanding and develop the decision-making skills required in steelmaking operations. The steeluniversity simulators provide an opportunity to practise, test different approaches and learn from the results of each production run.
Ahead of steelChallenge-21, Dr Ing. Ronald O’Brien, Instructional Designer at steeluniversity, will guide participants through the EAF and Secondary Steelmaking simulators and demonstrate how simulation can be used to develop practical process knowledge.
What you will learn:
- Apply core metallurgy concepts to EAF and secondary steelmaking processes.
- Navigate the EAF and Secondary Steelmaking simulators and complete a full production run.
- Interpret simulation data to support process decisions and optimisation.
- Build practical experience in preparation for steelChallenge-21.
