Summary of the lecture

Protection of people extends across multiple dimensions, including health and hygiene, physical safety, and mental well-being. In this insightful webinar, worldstainless Secretary General Tim Collins will explore various aspects of our daily lives, questioning whether we, as individuals and as a society, are truly considering and implementing the best measures to safeguard ourselves and our loved ones.

Throughout the session, it will become clear that stainless steels play a crucial role in enhancing safety and protection in everyday life. While widely used across industries and infrastructure, their economic and protective benefits often go unnoticed or underappreciated.

Join us for our first webinar of 2025 as Tim Collins delves into the many ways stainless steels contribute to a safer, healthier future—and what we should all be thinking about to ensure long-term protection for ourselves and society.

What you will learn:

  • The superior health and hygiene benefits of stainless steels compared to alternative materials.
  • How stainless steels provide physical protection through barrier systems, handrails, and impact resistance—absorbing 1.5 times more impact energy than carbon steel.
  • The role of stainless steels in preventing structural failures through corrosion resistance.
  • How stainless steels contribute to seismic activity resistance, enhancing safety in earthquake-prone regions.

Speaker Introduction

Tim Collins

Tim Collins
Secretary-General
worldstainless

Tim was born and grew up in the home of UK stainless steelmaking, Sheffield. Whilst at school he worked part-time for his father making steelworks thermocouples and laboratory furnaces.

After leaving school he studied metallurgy at university and joined British Steel Stainless immediately after graduating. A succession of industry mergers saw Tim undertaking senior stainless technical, operations and supply chain roles in the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK before joining the ISSF (now worldstainless) in August 2019. During his career Tim also found time to study Goldratt’s teaching on lean flow and operations, gain a postgraduate diploma in operations and inventory management and a masters degree in business administration.

Away from work Tim still supports his boyhood football club, Sheffield Wednesday and enjoys rock music, cycling, fine wines and craft ales.
