STK0419 – Building with stainless steels for a resilient and low-maintenance future

Description

Date: 13 September, 2024, 13.00 UTC. Webinar

Estimated Time: 1 hr

Language: English

Summary of the lecture

Stainless steels are often discounted as suitable materials for the built environment as they are seen as high-cost materials. They do however, when correctly selected for each application, offer the ability to lightweight structures with no loss of structural integrity. Furthermore, they can offer corrosion prevention in locations where corrosion is often invisible which thereby ensures ongoing structural and/or operational integrity. Stainless steels are a super family of materials which are often not fully understood. Discover why stainless steels, should be part of our routine materials palette, for the built environment.

At the end of this steeltalk, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the historical use and benefits of stainless steels in construction.
  • Recognize the different types and grades of stainless steels and their applications.
  • Recognize the role of stainless steels in promoting sustainability and the circular economy.
  • Comprehend the types of corrosion and how stainless steels can minimize corrosion-related damage.
  • Analyze cost savings and maintenance benefits provided by stainless steels in long-term structural projects.

Speaker Introduction

Tim Collins

Management Board
Secretary General
world stainless association

Tim was born and grew up in the home of UK stainless steelmaking, Sheffield. Whilst at school he worked part-time for his father making steelworks thermocouples and laboratory furnaces. After leaving school he studied metallurgy at university and joined British Steel Stainless immediately after graduating. A succession of industry mergers saw Tim undertaking senior stainless technical, operations and supply chain roles in the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK before joining the ISSF (now worldstainless) in August 2019. During his career Tim also found time to study Goldratt’s teaching on lean flow and operations, gain a post￾graduate diploma in operations and inventory management and a masters degree in business administration. Away from work Tim still supports his boyhood football club, Sheffield Wednesday and enjoys rock music, cycling, fine wines and craft ales.
