This presentation outlines the results of academic research that was carried out on Process Safety at the University of Sheffield in 2018 by Mohamed.

The research examines 100 major process incidents that occurred in different industries; of which 10% of these incidents occurred in the steel industry.

The research aims to find out answers to the following questions:

  • What is the correlation between different stages of the asset lifecycle and process safety incidents?
  • What is the impact of the process safety incidents on people?
  • What are the immediate and root causes of Process safety Incidents?
  • How can we prevent process safety incidents?

Mohamed Osman Al Hashimi MSc (Eng), FS Eng (TÜV Rheinland) Process Safety Engineer, Emirates Steel

Mohamed Osman Al Hashimi

Mohamed is an Accredited Process Safety Engineer with 15 years of experience in process safety, HSE operations, radiation protection, risk assessment, SIS & functional safety, fire protection engineering and accident investigation.

Since June 2007, Mohamed has been working for Emirates Steel, based in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Emirates Steel produces 3.6 million tonnes of steel and employs 3,000 workers.

Mohamed holds a Master of Engineering in Process Safety and Loss Prevention from the University of Sheffield and a Post Graduate Diploma & BSc in Safety, Health & Environment from the University of Greenwich.

He is also certified as:

  • Functional Safety Engineer (TÜV Rheinland);
  • Radiation Protection Officer.
  • Advanced Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) Team Leader.
