Summary of the lecture

Operational research developed as a multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving. The steel industry has contributed significantly both to the techniques and application of operational research.

This lecture focuses on:

  • Investment decisions for capacity augmentation,
  • Decisions on equipment specification for desired capacity output,
  • Reducing delays in the steelmaking shop,
  • Dispatch planning of finished steel,
  • Raw material linkage plan, and
  • Developing decision rules for limited availability of power.

Speaker Introduction

Arabinda Tripathy

(Prof) Dr Arabinda Tripathy is an eminent educator and researcher in management science, with a focus on operations management & research, quantitative techniques, and project management.

He has been a Professor at IIM Ahmedabad, where he has taught for over 25 years, in the area of Production and Quantitative Methods. He also teaches at other IIMs, XLRI Jamshedpur and the Adani Institute of Infrastructure Management, Ahmedabad.

Dr Tripathy was previously Dean of Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur and Director of the Institute of Petroleum Management, Gandhinagar. He has served with Tata Steel Limited for 14 years in the area of energy, utility services and project management.

Dr Tripathy holds a doctorate degree in operational research from the London School of Economics.
