Summary of the lecture

The approach taken by ArcelorMittal on carbon will be outlined. Whilst hydrogen-based manufacturing is clearly one important route to decarbonise primary steel making, there are others, each with their own important advantages. These will be explained in the lecture.

Alan will explain how the carbon agenda fits in to the wider Sustainability agenda and in particular explain the emerging contribution of ResponsibleSteel, the industry first multistakeholder Sustainable Development standard.

Dr Alan Knight OBE

Alan has over 30 years’ experience of working with global companies, including Virgin Group, B&Q, and SABMiller, NGO’s and governments.

He joined ArcelorMittal in 2014 as General Manager for Sustainable Development and Corporate Responsibility. Since then, has helped develop a sustainability framework ranging from products to process. He is Cochairman of ResponsibleSteel and sits on the steering board of the Initiative for Responsible Mining.

Alan previously served on the Sustainable Development Commission. He is a Senior Associate of the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership.

He was awarded the OBE (1998), Rainforest Alliance Lifelong Award (2005), and Honorary Fellow of the Society for the Environment (2013).
