Summary of the lecture

Stainless steel is critical to the world economy and seen in everyday use. From cutlery and cookware for daily meals, to surgical tools necessary for saving lives, to transportation, architecture, and more.

This steelTalks will give an overview of how stainless steels are produced and the growth potential in applications.

The lecture will also differentiate the different types of stainless steel and address how the industry is addressing the sustainability credentials of stainless steel.

Further, the role of the International Stainless Steel Forum in advancing the knowledge and application of stainless steel will be addressed.

After graduating with an honour’s degree in Metallurgy, Tim joined the graduate programme of British Steel Stainless as a technical graduate in the early 1980’s.

Tim enjoyed early roles in the technical, supply chain and operations functions before becoming Supply Chain Head for the Hot Rolled Plate Division of AvestaSheffield following the merger between British Steel Stainless and Avesta AB.

Tim was actively engaged in the next merger with Outokumpu Oyj to form AvestaPolarit in 2001. After the company was rebranded as Outokumpu in 2004, Tim was appointed into the position of Supply Chain General Manager for the Long Products Business Area. Tim also enjoyed a 2-year term, in the late 2010s, running the bar and rod businesses of Outokumpu in Sheffield. Tim also was accepted onto the Board of the BSSA during the 2010s and held the position of BSSA Chairman between 2017 and 2019.

Tim took up his current position of Secretary-General of the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) in August 2019.
