Summary of the lecture

Offshore wind energy, which was developed mainly in Europe, is expanding all over the world, including Asia and the Americas.

Offshore wind power developers are heading farther and deeper into the sea in search of better quality winds, and as a result, interest in floating offshore wind is growing. Through several demonstration projects, it was revealed that the efficiency or capacity factor of floating wind power is significantly higher than that of the fixed bottom type.

Currently, numerous floating wind power commercialization projects are underway or planned around the world. While the growth of the floating wind power industry can be an opportunity for many stakeholders, it is necessary to consider how to contribute to securing the competitiveness of the industry.

In this talk, we will get to know the role of stakeholders in the steel industry for the expansion of the floating wind industry. In this context, this lecture will share the speaker’s experience of participating in the development of floating wind substructures.

Speaker Introduction

Eungsoo Kim
Senior Researcher
Steel Solution Research Center/POSCO

Eungsoo Kim is a senior researcher in the steel solution research centre at POSCO in South Korea.

He has studied at Hanyang Unveristy (South Korea) for B.S. and M.S. degrees and at the University of Texas at Austin (US) for a PhD. During his doctoral degree, he conducted a study on the reliability of offshore wind structures in a hurricane environment.

Since 2015, he has conducted diverse research related to the optimal design of floating offshore wind substructures and now he is leading a research project to develop a new type of floating wind substructure with an offshore wind developer.
