STK0405 – Future mobility: dumping fossil fuels

Description

Date: 26 March, 2021. Webinar

Estimated Time: 1 hr

Language: English

Summary of the lecture

Our world is changing fast and needs to change fast! Since the use of fossil fuels in vehicles are one of the most significant factors polluting our environment, affecting not only the air we breathe, but also the land and the water we need, solutions must to be found to minimise GHG pollution.

Amongst available and developing solutions, green hydrogen is a booming alternative with all the right credentials. Stainless steels will be needed in every step of the production and use of green hydrogen; to produce the hydrogen, to transport and store the hydrogen and in the vehicles that are powered by hydrogen. Learn about all the options for the use of a fully recyclable, highly corrosion resistant family of materials with cryogenic attributes to effectively support the development of the Hydrogen economy.

At the end of this steeltalk, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate different alternative energy sources for sustainable mobility.
  • Analyze the benefits and challenges of hydrogen fuel cell technology.
  • Compare battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in terms of lifecycle emissions.
  • Assess the role of stainless steel in supporting hydrogen storage and distribution infrastructure.

Speaker Introduction

Tim Collins

Management Board
Secretary General
world stainless association

Tim was born and grew up in the home of UK stainless steelmaking, Sheffield. Whilst at school he worked part-time for his father making steelworks thermocouples and laboratory furnaces. After leaving school he studied metallurgy at university and joined British Steel Stainless immediately after graduating. A succession of industry mergers saw Tim undertaking senior stainless technical, operations and supply chain roles in the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK before joining the ISSF (now worldstainless) in August 2019. During his career Tim also found time to study Goldratt’s teaching on lean flow and operations, gain a post￾graduate diploma in operations and inventory management and a masters degree in business administration. Away from work Tim still supports his boyhood football club, Sheffield Wednesday and enjoys rock music, cycling, fine wines and craft ales.
