steelManagement Readiness Survey

STEELMANAGEMENT READINESS SELF-ASSESSMENT

Mapping Your Strategic Journey

The steel industry is changing rapidly. Decarbonisation, artificial intelligence, geopolitical uncertainty, changing markets and major national industrial ambitions are reshaping both the competitive environment and the expectations placed upon leaders.

Increasingly, success requires leaders to look beyond their own function: to understand the wider system, make difficult choices under uncertainty, mobilise others and take responsibility for the long-term health and competitiveness of the organisation. steelManagement is designed to help experienced functional leaders broaden their perspective towards enterprise leadership – the shift we describe as Strategic Stewardship.

The Purpose of this Tool

There is no pass or fail, and there is no “best” score. This self-assessment is designed to help you – and your organisation – decide whether steelManagement offers the right level of challenge and development for you at this point in your career.

steelManagement is an immersive, case-based learning experience centred on a real strategic challenge. During the programme, participants work with incomplete information, collaborate across functional and cultural boundaries, use AI as a thinking partner, make trade-offs and present their recommendations to senior leaders.

The aim is not to achieve the highest score. It is to identify whether the programme offers you the right balance of relevant experience, challenge and room to grow.

How to Complete the Assessment

Reflect Honestly

There are no “correct” answers. A higher score is not necessarily better – it simply indicates a different level of current experience.

Base Your Answers on Experience

Think about what you have actually done, rather than what you understand theoretically.

Think of Real Examples

Where possible, recall a genuine example from your work during the past two or three years. If you cannot readily identify one, select the lower level.

Think About Stretch Situations

Consider situations involving ambiguity, competing priorities or meaningful consequences – not only familiar work within your own function.

The Four-Level Experience Scale

For each of the 15 statements, select the level that best describes your current experience. These levels describe experience and responsibility; they are not formal skill-proficiency ratings.

1

Level 1 — Foundational Exposure

I understand some of the concepts, but I have had limited opportunity to apply them in practice. I would benefit from guidance and experience in this area.

2

Level 2 — Practitioner Experience

I have applied this within my own function or area of responsibility and feel comfortable in familiar situations. I am building confidence when the situation becomes unfamiliar, cross-functional or higher stakes.

3

Level 3 — Strategic Application

I regularly apply this in significant business situations, often across functions or stakeholder groups. I can work independently, make trade-offs and explain my reasoning to senior stakeholders.

4

Level 4 — Enterprise Leadership

I hold substantial responsibility for these outcomes at business or enterprise level. I shape approaches, make high-stakes decisions and regularly guide, challenge or coach other experienced leaders.

Use the survey to see where steelManagement is likely to reinforce your strengths and where it could provide the greatest stretch.
