STK0217 – Implementation of welded joints between bars: articulation versus embedment

Description

Estimated Time: 1 hr

Language: Spanish

SUMMARY OF THE LECTURE

The join of the structural bars from hot rolled profiles can be done by welding.

This connection between bars, depending on the geometry of the sections to be joined, may have specific requirements regarding their behaviour in the face of the stresses that act on them, and may behave, due to design needs, as a joint or as an embedment, or in the intermediate case as a semi-embedment.

In order to implement these conditions, it is convenient to review some RMM (Resistance of Materials) topics, in relation to stress distributions in cases of bending and shear stresses and translate them to the specific case of welding.

The orientation of the presentation is conceptual, paying special attention to design aspects, avoiding the numerical part.

SPEAKERS INTRODUCTION

Carlos Romea Rosas
Industrial Engineer
UPC Director of the MEM Master,
Zigurat metallic and mixed structures

With more than forty years of experience in engineering and architecture projects in industrial construction, metal structures have been part of the daily work of his specialty, which has allowed him to deepen, from practice, in this structural typology. He has worked as director of the Department of Design and Calculation of structures in two reference engineering companies in Barcelona: Pamias Servicios de Ingeniería and Torrella Ingeniería de Terrassa.

During these more than 40 years he has combined his professional activity with the academic one, dedicating himself to professional training at the Joan XXIII school in Bellvitge (SJ), and for 25 years, until retirement, as a professor at the UPC, in the department of Material Resistance. He collaborated as a technical trainer at the Institut Català Tècnic de soldadura, ICTS, which imparts the IWE title of welding engineer at a national level.

He has published all kinds of technical articles in specialised magazines, and collaborated in the publication of reference books such as Reinforced Concrete, 16th edition, by the popular “Jiménez Montoya (MMM)”, as well as giving courses and conferences, both in Spain and in South America.
